The Moorooduc Quarry was established in 1887 and in 1888 a railway line was built from the quarry to Moorooduc Station so that stone and ballast could be transported from the quarry for the construction of the railway line between Baxter and Mornington. You can still see remains of one of the stone crushers that was used when the quarry was operating. The quarry was closed in 1961 due to flooding and over time became a popular swimming hole for locals, later being transformed into the Moorooduc Quarry Flora and Fauna Reserve. In 1986 the reserve was used for the movie "Frog Dreaming" starring Henry Thomas. Native wildflowers and grasses are abundant in the reserve. If you are lucky you may be fortunate to spot the resident Peregrine Falcon overhead, along with 45 different species of birds. The lake is home to a number of waterbirds and the occasional Koala can sometimes be seen in the Eucalyptus trees. Challenge your fitness by completing the stairs circuit. It is quite steep and unsteady in place with over 200 steps taking you to the peak where you will be rewarded with fantastic views across the Moorooduc Plains....Accommodation Gold Coast welcomes Moorooduc Quarry Walk & Stairs Circuit in Mount Eliza VIC, we offer an experience that takes you on a journey of a life time in Mount Eliza.
